DAY 4 - MOVIE

WATERBOY (1992)

I was originally going to view the movie The Lawnmower Man, but I could not find a copy of it. That's ok, it wasn't that good of a movie anyway, it just fit the theme better. Anyway, I chose the movie Waterboy because in it Bobby Boucher (Adam Sandler) drives around in a riding lawnmower. This is a really entertaining movie. Even today I know of people who will randomly shout out quotes from the movie if it fits their topic of conversation. Because this is a hysterically funny movie and it is still quoted by the general public today, I have no choice but to rate this movie with aaaaa. This movie is about a young man who is "different" than most. He becomes the local university's waterboy for the football team. Later he finds out that he can be a really good football player if he can become angry for a moment. Since nobody can make him angry enough times during a football game to make him effective, he imagines that they are being mean to him - from some of his past experiences. This in turn gives him enough adrenaline to make the play and save the day. This really is a must see for everyone.

DAY 4 - WORKOUT - Yard Work!!

For today's workout I Mowed the front and back yard, weeded a section of Sandy's garden, Edged the yard, Weeded around the house and fence, and used a blower to blow the yard debris into a pile then sweeping it up to put in the trash. If you don't think this is a workout, go try it sometime. The edging was a pain because the grass had grown over onto the sidewalk. Needless to say, this job took about 4 hours. I am sunburned and completely drained of energy. But the yard looks nice.

Pictures are on Sandy's phone. I will edit this page later when I can retrieve them.

DAY 3 - MOVIE

PRIDE (2007)

This movie features Terrence Howard and the late great Bernie Mac. It is a story that was inspired by true events. This does in no terms mean that this is a true story. There were a lot of flaws and inaccuracies in this movie, but overall it was very entertaining. The movie starts out with Howard's character trying to compete in a college swim meet in the year 1964. Due to the segregation issues of this time, a riot breaks out at the meet. Then it flashes to 1974 where Howard's character is trying to land a job as a swim coach at a prestigeous academy. He is denied the position and takes on a job that involves shutting down a recreation center in Philadelphia and deciedes to try to keep the recreation center open by starting a swim team with Bernie Mac's character.

This is an overall enjoyable watch. I give it a rating of aaa. It was a good movie and I would suggest watching it if you are into sports movies or inspirational movies.

DAY 3 - WORKOUT - Swimming??

WORKOUT:

Swim 20 lengths of the pool any stroke. GOAL: Try to do at least 5 lengths without stopping.

When I was a kid, I was on the Overbrook Swim Team. I won several ribbons in the freestyle and breaststroke competitions. I never was great, but I could swim with almost anyone in my age division except for Basil Hicks who swam for the larger swimming organization at the time (I don't recall the name). Basil was fast. On the other hand my wife (Sandy Serio Jacobs) was a very good swimmer and swam on the McKinney High School swim team and was looking at swimming in college. It is because of her that I even try to swim laps. Her family LIVES at the swimming pool. Her dad is the swim and dive coach at McKinney High and has been for over 20 years. Both my wife and I work for him during the summer teaching swim lessons to children ages 3-12. She does infant/parent lessons as well. We are about 1 week away from starting another summer of lessons - YEA!

The workout was a little difficult for me because I am in nowhere near the shape I need to be in. When I workout at L.A. Fitness (http://www.lafitness.com/), I try to come into the pool and swim 10 lengths. This workout was double the norm. I swam the first two lengths freestyle without stopping and continued the next 4 with breaststroke without stopping. That is 6 lengths without stopping (not bad - for me). Then I swam 2 lengths backstroke and 2 breast. For the last 10 lengths I swam 2 breaststroke without stopping, 1 freestyle sprint (as fast as I could go), 2 breaststroke, 1 freestyle sprint, 1 backstroke, 2 breaststroke, and the last length - freestyle sprint.

DAY 2 - MOVIE

Movie: THE 'BURBS (1989)

This was a fun movie to watch again. It stars Tom Hanks who just wants a quiet peaceful vacation at home. Basically he and some of his neighborhood friends start snooping around the new neighbors house because they suspect they are leading a cannibalistic cult. The comedy in this film is your typical Tom Hanks (A little bit of OVERACTING). It was enjoyable to watch and I will have to give it a rating of aaaa, because it was a very good movie in that it was probably funnier in the late 80's or early 90's, but the humor of Tom Hanks still stands up today. This movie also had the lovable Cory Feldman. His character was a nice addition to the cast that also had Carrie Fisher (Princess Liea). This is a movie that I recommend viewing if you haven't seen it, or view it again if it has been almost 20 years since you did before.

DAY 2 - WORKOUT - Neighborhood Walk

Today's WORKOUT was to take a walk through my neighborhood. The walk consisted of about 1.2 miles in length. It wasn't quite a stroll, but not speed walking either. I live in a Suburb of Dallas, but it is mainly quiet. I don't have any strange or creepy neighbors - That I know of. We might have a drug dealer or two. I think this because of the multiple times I have seen the police down the street and the strange interaction I had with them one night about a year ago, but that is a long story. Also, do we really know our neighbors anymore. I remember as a kid, we knew both neighbors on either side of us, the ones across the street, and behind the house really well. Then we knew some of the other neighbors around the block or up the street. I can honestly say that I only know the neighbor next to me (barely) only because we share a mailbox and are going to have to share the cost of fixing it because some retard keeps running into it. Maybe one day I will make it a point to go out and meet some neighbors - Oh wait what am I thinking, this isn't the '80's anymore. The above pic is of my house at Christmas (See the Red Lights!). I couldn't take any pictures during today's walk because I don't know where the camera is and my phone broke last night.:(

DAY 1 - MOVIE

MOVIE: BMX Bandits (1983)

BMX Bandits is an Australian movie that showed up in the U.S. in 1983 when BMX Racing was all the rage. It stars the talented actress Nicole Kidman in probably her 1st role ever. I will be rating my movies on a 5 check mark rating. The ratings are below. I would have to give BMX Bandits a rating of (aaa) due to the fact that it was overall a good movie, but would have been better during its time. When this came out, I was 10 and my little brother was 3. At the age of 10 I was really into the BMX phase and so wanted the plastic mag wheels for my bike. My friends and I would set up ramps and ride down the street doing tricks on our bikes. This was the way it was and it was cool. THEN. Watching it today, the acting was pretty bad and the sound effects were awful. The plot was mildly interesting and it was rated G and basically geared towards kids and teens. Although I did find a few things interesting. The kids stole walkie-talkies that the bank robbers were going to use for another job and Nicole Kidman's character told the BOSS this when asked where the walkie-talkies were. "Your walkie-talkies have gone walkies." Plus you can't beat a movie based for children that has a priest in a sexually inappropriate position with a blowup doll. You can find this possibly at Wal-Mart in the $1 movies or you might have to pay a little more online. If you want to reminisce about the strange days of the '80's than this might be an enjoyable watch for you.

Movie Ratings:
aaaaa = Great movie. A must see.

aaaa = Very good movie. If you haven't seen it, you should. If you have seen it, watch it again.

aaa = Good Movie. Enjoyable to watch.
(If older movie) Probably better at time it was made, but doesn't stand up today.

aa = Not So Good. Don't really wish I had my time back, but was bored most of the time.
a = Horrible. Wish I had my time and/money back. Don't waste your time.

DAY 1 - WORKOUT - The Bike Ride

Today I was sitting at home creating this blog and suddenly started to get hungry. Well no wonder it was after noon and I hadn't eaten a thing. I looked and saw that there really wasn't anything to eat in the house, so I decided to go to Subway to get a sandwich - ON MY BIKE!

To the left is my bike which has not been out of the garage more than once since I bought it about a year ago. Needless to say I had to go and get some air in the tires before I could undergo my journey. At about 1:40 p.m. in the heat of the day and starving like a bear after hibernation, I set out to go and get something to eat at Subway while exchanging videos at Blockbuster on the way.

THE WORKOUT: Ride Mountain bike 2.8 miles round trip to exchange videos and eat lunch.

This doesn't sound too difficult for most people, but I am pretty sure I exceed the weight parameters on my bike and haven't ridden a bike for any kind of distance in about 20 years. I remember I loved to ride my bike all over North Little Rock, Arkansas as a kid. I lived by the YMCA on JFK and would ride to the Scorecard card shop located around McCain and JFK. For a 10-15 year old boy this was a great distance on a busy street. Anyway back to today's journey. About a half a mile into the ride, my handle bars became loose and were now twisting up and down the rest of the way because I didn't think to bring a "Allen Wrench" - Stupid Me! But even though this occurred, the trip was successful.

Starting Point

Even though I am going to do one workout associated with a movie every day for the next 90 days, I still plan to actually go to the gym to get in some cardio and weights as well. I am currently 382.2 lbs. on the home scale. My playing weight in college for football was 275-285 lbs. My ultimate goal is to get back around that weight or lower. I realize this will take more than 90 days, these workouts here are just to try to motivate me to do SOMETHING and to enjoy the world around me. I will also post any gym workouts and a weekly report of my weight from the home scale. This is more to motivate me than anyone who might happen to read. I feel that if I am putting it in writing for anyone to see, that might increase my motivation. I know I will never be as skinny (as if I was skinny in high school) as I was at prom (left) with Stacey Avery (Currently: Stacey Avery Snead). I just don't want to be as big as I am now (right) for the rest of my life.

The Idea

I have been sitting here for months trying to figure out just how to motivate my lazy butt into getting up off of the couch and work out. One day I noticed a friend from high school (Heather Burnett) had posted a blog for a workout she came up with in order to stay in shape and help train for a marathon. You can view Heather's blog here: http://90days90workouts.blogspot.com/ . In her blog she does one workout every day for 90 days and discusses the day in general and the ideas behind each workout.

This got my mind wondering what kind of things could I do to motivate myself into working out and not really feel as if I am working out all the time. I started having these ideas of things I could do, but most of them ended in a reward for the workout that either cost money, extra calories, or both. Then I thought about what I enjoyed doing with my free time. My wife and I enjoy watching movies more than your average person. Plus, no matter how much I have to work, I always find time to either watch tv or watch a movie on DVD. So I decided to take a similar approach to what Heather was doing and use my love for movies to motivate me to workout in some way - no matter how small or big, over the next 90 days.

The goal is to plan and accomplish a workout of some kind based on a movie that I choose to watch that day. I have to complete the workout before being able to watch the movie. It could be a movie I have never seen before or a movie I have seen a hundred times. Then I will report on the workout and the movie in my blog. Hopefully my love for movies will be the motivation I need to get up off the couch in order to workout, in order to get back on the couch to enjoy the show.
